Risk Analysis - Mercury in Pipelines

Many pipelines and field gathering lines around the world carry natural gas and liquids that contain small amounts of mercury. It is well known that mercury in natural gas and condensates reacts with iron oxide/sulfide corrosion products on the interior surfaces of such pipelines. The question is whether mercury accelerates the normal corrosion process operating in pipelines or interferes with chemical inhibition.
